I had a chance to move on, but the dishes in the sink held me back.

Okay, I know that no one is actually reading this as I do not post very often. However if someone is reading this and would like to send me their horror stories of Boardwalk or any other rental issues, just let me know.

Anyhoo. Here is what I feel like letting off some steam about: Boardwalk. You see, I am tired of living in my little bachelor apartment paying $370 a month. So I was/am looking to move out. At first I was looking into a one bedroom, then a fried of mine said he needed a roommate and I offered to take the position. I said that I would talk to Boardwalk about the transfer and the inherent procedures that would go with it. Here are the Procedures to do so.

1. Give them $150. This is not so bad as they give it back to you if they don't need all of it to fix any repairs that are needed to your apartment. I had no problem with this.
2. Allow them to come in for an inspection to see if there are any over the top damages that would make them consider you a risk and then prevent you from doing the same to your potential future apartment. That's fine, I set the date for last Saturday. I do have one point of damage in here, and that would be the hole in the linoleum that My chair has made. I told them this was there before I even started the transfer process and they said it would probably be okay and went ahead with the process.
3. You also have to have no complaints about you from the neighbors. I am clear there.

That's about it. So, from the moment they show me my apartment that I think I am going to move in to, they give me about 2 weeks. They said they cannot hold an apartment longer than that. No problem, that means I just have to hurry and get packing so I can move. I have to clean and pack, pack and clean. Then comes last Saturday; two women show up to "inspect". I immediately point out the hole in the linoleum I talked about earlier. Then they glanced around and left literally less than 2 minutes since they took their shoes off. I asked them how long it would take before I would be able to get my keys, you know seeing that I was to move within a week. They told me I had to wait until the transfer application was approved. "This is cutting it very close!" I am thinking inside my head.

So today is Wednesday, and I woke up still not hearing any news about whether or not my application went through or not...I move in THREE days, I should know these things so that I may call Sasktel and Saskpower, and change everything over. I decided that I should call Boardwalk and find out what is going on.

I call, they pick up the phone, I ask, they pause before they answer and look it up on the computer. They then tell me that I was declined. I pause...what? What do you mean, why? They explained, but I would rather hear it face to face, so I went across the street to the office.

They expained it to me again: First off the hole in my floor was a problem. This I understand, I am willing to cover any extra expenses required to cover the damages, right now on the spot if I must, I have the money just for this situation. They said no dice. I said that it wasn't just my chair's fault that the linoleum got eaten up, but also that the floor has a huge hump in it, and that when the chair moves, it gets hung up on the hump (my floor is so slanted that the fridge is at an horrible angle). But, I am willing to take full responsibility for it, as I do not want to cause any trouble, just move peacefully.

But that is not all! There were a few dishes in my sink: A teakettle, a Pitcher, silverware, strainer and a couple plastic tupperware things. Wait, having dishes in a sink makes me a risk? I can't move because there are a few dishes in my sink? WHOA...that's news. I mean I am cleaning all my dishes before I pack them away so I can move, which was to happen a week after the inspection...and since when is dishes a damage issue?

But let's say I could get past that, there were water stains in my tub! Holy FUCK!! FOR SURE THEY CAN'T MOVE ME NOW! What? Sorry? I can wipe it down if you like...nope, no dice.

How about this...there were boxes stacked up in the living room. Wait...aren't I moving in a week, why wouldn't there be boxes? God I hate these people. When I explained I was moving, they were courteous enough to say that they could look past the boxes...isn't that nice. First they force me to move in a span of two weeks, which means I book a day off work to make sure I can get extra packing done, and then they think that I shouldn't have a bit of a mess. I mean I am moving here. jeez.

So, I ask them, how can I turn this around to make my transfer accepted. They said, NO DICE, its done. They said that if I clean it up, and then prove that I can keep it clean, then we can try again. I am assuming of course that the linoleum is the biggest issue. How does one clean the hole in their linoleum? I think they were just trying to get rid of me.

I have called the rentalsmen who have sent me a form to fill out to set up a hearing to fight boardwalk on this.

This is what is bothering me now. I wanted to move out by the end of March/April 1st. I went in and told them that I was to move and I wanted to stay with them, I told them the issue. They checked on my place on Saturday. Hmm, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, let's assume they were going to tell me on Thurday...that's hmm. 6 days to tell me that they can't let me move...I am impressed by their speed,

I have a theory.

In late January 2006 I found a list, a list I should not have found (it was laying in the entryway of my building, I picked it up and thought it might come in handy). It is a list of all vacant apartments as of Jan 19th 2006. Let's check the numbers shall we?

Vacant Bachelor "suites": 17
Vacant 1 Bedroom "suites": 25
Vacant 2 Bedroom "suites": 12
Vacant Studios: 2

Total Rent Loss as of 01/19/2006: $36,346.
Percent of "suites" vacant: 7.62%.

I am paying $370 a month for a tiny no bedroom bottom floor apartment. For a two bedroom with a Balcony and air conditioning and being on the third floor, the price would be $649, my half being only $325. Looking at these numbers it seems they are losing a good chunk of money. And I am only assuming that they would have more 2 bedrooms than bachelors. And yet there are more vacant bachelors. 2 bedrooms seem easier to fill than Bachelors, so it would be in the best intrest to have me stay where I am than to move, because it would be harder to get someone to live where I do because of the lack of space, but the warped floor, the crooked door where light shines through the top and bottom. The space they cannot fix, that is a choice tenants (like myself) have to make. But I like how they could be bothered to fix the floor or door, but dishes and water stains are a sin upon my apartment.

Whatever. Fuck.

What I am doing to try to get by this, is having the roommate I had in mind go down to the boardwalk and ask to get a two bedroom, they will give him one, and then I will move in with him, sneaking past their miserable defences. They want me to give a full month;s notice before I move, which in my opinion I did, but they tried to force me to move in 2 weeks, limiting my options, thereby making an attept to hold me here.

I will try to keep this posted as to what happens...if you are interested, or if not. I need to vent

Ciao.
